Toronto Chronic Pain Assessment & Diagnosis
Chronic pain is usually defined as pain that persists for three or more months.
Caused by a number of different factors including illness and injury, pain can be debilitating and often negatively impacts a person’s quality of life. If you suffer from chronic pain in Toronto, you may find that it limits your mobility, makes it difficult to complete work and other daily tasks, and hinders your ability to participate in activities that you enjoy. Chronic pain may affect self-esteem, wellbeing, and ability to support yourself and your family. In addition to the physical pain it causes, chronic pain can take a tremendous toll on your mental and emotional health and is consequently linked to an increased risk of depression and anxiety. This can be extremely discouraging, particularly when the source of your discomfort is unknown. However, it’s not necessary to suffer in silence; at Painless Medicine and Therapeutics in Toronto, we’re dedicated to carefully assessing and diagnosing patients in order to formulate personalized treatment plans. With every assessment and diagnosis, our goal is to provide patients with the answers they desire, as well as the support they require, thereby improving their quality of life.
Assessment & Diagnosis
At our Toronto chronic pain management practice, our caring clinicians thoroughly assess each patient in order to provide a diagnosis and determine the best course of action. We offer multimodal management for chronic pain, providing a wide range of treatment options including exercise therapy, psychological counseling, training in mindfulness, meditation, healthy eating, naturopathic treatments, medications, manual therapy, and integrative therapies. Although many patients have similar concerns and symptoms, we recognize that each client is unique and we are dedicated to working with individuals to develop a personalized treatment plan, which restores quality of life as they define it.
MVA-Related Injuries
If you’ve been in a car accident, it’s important to visit us as soon as possible for a thorough assessment.
Many patients feel fine directly after a motor vehicle accident (MVA) but may have sustained a serious injury or soft tissue injury that is not immediately apparent. A multidisciplinary approach is taken for MVA patients to restore their health and ensure that they’re able to function at home and in the workplace.
Sports-Related Injuries
A large component of our practice is dedicated to sports and injury rehabilitation. Our team of experienced manual therapists can support you as you recover from a variety of sport and non-sport related injuries to the musculoskeletal system. The goal of the treatment is to repair body function and performance while ensuring your comfort and wellness. We offer a wide range of therapeutic services including medical acupuncture/dry needling, shockwave therapy, functional movement assessment, strength training, corrective rehabilitation, chiropractic care, active release technique, and massage therapy. Depending on your needs, two or more of the aforementioned procedures may be combined to address your injury effectively.
Concussion Management
Our manual therapists at Painless Medicine and Therapeutics have the knowledge and experience necessary to diagnose and manage concussion injuries. We use an evidence-based approach that begins with a short period of physical and mental rest at the onset of your concussion to allow the brain time to recover and prevent sustained brain damage. Next, we work with patients to help them return to work and physical activities, addressing all areas of the body that were affected by the injury.
We believe in a holistic approach, which is why we offer a range of services including psychological and neuropsychological counseling, manual therapy, neurorehabilitation strategies, and nutritional intervention. We work closely with the patient while also communicating with their family doctor, workplace or school.
Psychology
Because we are dedicated to providing holistic service, we compliment our physical pain treatments with a variety of services that aim to support our patient’s cognitive and emotional health. For example, we offer individual counseling, pharmacotherapy, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is a powerful psychological process that involves focusing one’s attention on the present moment rather than the past or future. This practice has been proven to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression and can be incredibly effective in chronic pain management. At Painless Medicine Clinic, we offer mindfulness classes designed to reduce the stress and anxiety associated with chronic pain and instill psychological and emotional resilience.
Naturopathic Medicine
Our team of naturopathic doctors treat concussions and chronic pain resulting from injury with naturopathic medicine. As with every service we offer, this is a completely customizable treatment plan. This diagnosis begins with a functional nutrition assessment that involves a clinical consultation and/or lab testing. In some cases, an assessment of your food allergies and sensitivities may be conducted, as these may contribute to underlying physical and/or mental disorders. In other instances, this treatment involves conducting a Health Foundations examination to determine the digestive system’s ability to absorb nutrients. In the event that you suffer from systemic inflammation, oral botanical and enzymatic supplements may be recommended.
Medicolegal Assessments
Because we are dedicated to providing a range of services to our clients, all of our staff members are also experienced medicolegal experts. Thus, in the event that your chronic pain is a result of a preventable injury, our practitioners can testify in court regarding your personal injury or trauma.
Anyone who suffers from chronic pain knows how incredibly debilitating it can be. In addition to the physical discomfort it causes, pain can have a detrimental impact on one’s personal and professional life- often linked with anxiety and depression. We’re dedicated to working with each patient to get to the root of chronic pain, providing a diagnosis and developing a personalized treatment plan which tackles the condition as a whole. It’s our goal to support our patients in every aspect of their life, reducing pain intensity, improving their wellbeing, and supporting them in order to ensure that they can return to work, school, sports, and leisure activities.
