Toronto Chiropractors

Chiropractors are hands-on, evidence-based medical professionals whose non-invasive practice revolves around the musculoskeletal system. Whether it is used as the primary method of treatment or as part of a multi-disciplinary approach, chiropractic care can effectively treat a wide range of disorders connected to the joints, spine, pelvis, and nervous system. Chiropractors are interested in the close relationship between the spine and nervous system, as the structural and biomechanical derangement of the spine impacts the nervous system and chiropractic treatment can successfully repair the spine’s structural integrity, thereby alleviating the patient’s discomfort and improving their quality of life.

Chiropractors assess and diagnosis each patient to devise a personalized plan designed to help treat and manage symptoms while also offering preventative care for a variety of disorders. Combinations of treatments are often recommended including therapeutic exercise and non-invasive therapies. In addition, chiropractors provide patients with guidance and counseling in various areas including diet, nutrition, and lifestyle.

What is the goal of Toronto chiropractic care?

Chiropractors dedicate their practice to diagnosing and treating neuromuscular disorders, which are treated through the manipulation of the spine or manual adjustment. The goal of chiropractic care is to minimize the patient’s pain while also improving their functionality, and educating them regarding their role in their health and pain management. Thus, chiropractors will recommend that patients make adjustments to their exercise or ergonomics to reduce their pain and improve their quality of life. The ultimate objective of chiropractors is to establish normal spinal mobility in order to lessen irritation to the spinal nerve and repair altered reflexes.

How does it work?

Much like any other medical examination, your first visit will involve a consultation, a discussion of your health history, and a physical examination.

First, you will be asked questions to determine the source and severity of your symptoms, as well as its duration and which movements alleviate or worsen your pain. Next, your chiropractor will ask questions to learn more about your medical history including your family history, occupational history, past treatments, diet and exercise. Finally, a physical examination will be performed to assess which areas require chiropractic care. This examination may include an x-ray of your spine, orthopedic tests, checking your blood pressure, pulse, and breathing, a reflex test, an analysis of your posture, an assessment of your movement such as how you walk, lift, and bend, and an evaluation of your spine’s movement.

Following your assessment, your chiropractor will provide a diagnosis and develop a personalized treatment plan designed with your specific needs in mind. The recommended treatment may include one or more of the following:

  • Chiropractic adjustment: this is the most common treatment provided by chiropractors. It involves manipulating the vertebrae to improve mobilization of the joints and reduce nerve irritability.
  • Hot/Cold Therapy: alternating heat and ice therapy may be used to improve blood flow to the treatment area and encourage healing.
  • Exercise regime: your chiropractor may provide you with an exercise regime to follow in order to stretch or strengthen your treatment area.
  • Ultrasound: an ultrasound or other form of electrotherapy may be used.
  • Nutritional counseling: your chiropractor may provide you with nutritional counseling, including tips for improving your diet and dietary supplements which will support your healing following spinal manipulation.
  • Massage: your chiropractor may massage the soft tissues to minimize swelling and encourage circulation and healing.

In the event that you would benefit from a multi-disciplinary approach, your chiropractor will also recommend and collaborate with other health care professionals to ensure that you receive the best care possible.

Chiropractic Care for Chronic Pain

Chronic pain, which is classified as pain that lasts for three months or longer, can take a tremendous toll on a patient’s quality of life.

However, it is estimated that 55% of Canadians suffer from some form of chronic pain. Whether it is back pain, chronic headaches, or pain caused by an accident, injury, or illness, persistent pain can impact one’s mobility and ability to work, which can have a devastating impact on their self-esteem, relationships, and outlook on life. While in some instances, the source of the pain may be obvious, oftentimes it is unclear and can be quite difficult to pinpoint. Luckily, chiropractors can assess, diagnose, and treat chronic pain by getting to the root of the problem, determining the origin of the pain. Toronto Chiropractors are experienced in assessing and diagnosing musculoskeletal (MSK) pain, which stems from the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

They alleviate MSK pain by working with patients to strengthen the core muscles that play a crucial role in supporting the spine. Using a variety of different treatments, including ultrasound therapy, spinal mobilization or manipulation, and targeted exercises, they can alleviate your symptoms or reduce their frequency, which can have a tremendous impact on your quality of life.
